15 nights 16 days Ganden Samye trek Tibet
Tibet adventure trip of a life time!
Trek to Ganden to Samye, passing the village of Hebu wild flowers, nomad tents, and yaks lie scattered in the landscape leading to Shuga La (17,200 Ft.). Crossing the valley floor on the other side the gradual ascent to Chiju La (16,70 Ft.') begins. The view of the surrounding areas from the pass is breathtaking. Dense alpine vegetation carpets the decent and wild flowers, birds, and possibly musk deer may be seen. Past the village of Yamalung and Nyengo south the trail ends at Samye. Samye, first monastery founded in Tibet during the reign of King Trison Deutsen under the spiritual guidance of Padmasambhava (Guru Rimpoche) and the Indian abbot Shantarakshita. Renowned as the center where sutra and tantra texts were originally translated from Sanskrit, Samye today reflects the four schools of Tibetan Buddhism. The monastery was modeled on the Odantapuri temple in Bihar and is an architectural representation of the Buddhist cosmology. And Ganden, founded by Tsongkhapa (founder of Ghelukpa sect), the great Tibetan philosopher saint, was the first Gelug monastery and traditionally remains the principal seat of the 'virtuous order'. Ganden in Buddhist cosmology is the western paradise of Tushita where Maitreya or Jampa in Tibetan, the future Buddha dwells.
Ganden is situated 45 km East of Lhasa on the Highway that follows the south bank of Kyi Chu to Medro Gongkar. This is one of the most beautiful sites in central Tibet, which is considered as an abode of Champa, the future Buddha. The monastery perched on the ridge called Gokpo Ri, the site was chosen by Tsong Lhapa (1357-1419) for his first meditation where the monastery built later. This is one of the great monasteries out of six, built by Gelukpa sect. This itinerary linking two of the most important monasteries in Central Tibet crosses the Yatro Drak range of mountains that divide the Tsangpo basin from the Lhasa Valley. The trek provides a superb means of access to Tibet's first monastery an institution founded in the 8th Century.
