A trek to Everest base camp - the world's tallest mountain and climb the Island peak - the most popular trekking peak in Nepal
Named “Island Peak” in 1952 due to its striking resemblance to a island on a sea of ice, this mountain was renamed “Imje Tse” in the early ’80's. Its original name is more often used.
The classic trek in the Everest region, including Kala Pattar and Everest Base camp, with an optional climb of Island Peak. This is a classic Nepal experience that will take you into the heart of the world's majestic Himalayas mountains. Island peak expedition offers a unique chance for beginning mountaineers to climb in a relatively lesser traveled region amidst the mighty Himalayas. The summit of Island peak stands adjacent to one of the world's largest ice walls and offers stunning views of Ama Dablam and the pyramid of Makalu. This trip walks us through the renowned Khumbu region. In the "land of the Sherpa" We partake in Nepalese and Tibetan cultures as they have existed for centuries. The Khumbu journey offers striking scenery as we venture through unspoiled terrain.
Located on top of the Chukung glacier between Ama Dablam and Lhotse Mountains, Island Peak is the most sought after trekking destination because of its challenging geographical conditions. Each year more than 300 groups attempt to scale the summit of Island peak. This trek offers an excellent opportunity to climb a Himalayan Summit [6173m] together with an exhilarating trek to the Everest Base Camp and Kala Pattar. The most difficult section is a mixed rock and ice wall at a slope of around 45 degrees leading to the narrow summit ridge.
Island Peak has an impressive, highly glaciated West Face, which rises from the Lhotse Glacier. In fact, the mountain extends from the South Ridge of Lhotse Shar and is separated only by a small col. above this gap is the ridge leading to summit. From base camp, we will ascend a steep, grassy slope and small rocky steps to high camp. It is necessary to climb a steep, exposed snow and ice ramp to the summit ridge; fixed ropes will be used where necessary increasing your chances of safely reaching the summit. We will negotiate a final snow pitch before reaching the summit. Stunning views of the surrounding mountains can be seen from the peak, including Nuptse, Lhotse, Cho Poul, Makalu, Ama Dablam and Baruntse.
We will break our stay in Dengboche, Shannsa, and Monjo as we make our way to Lukla for our flight back to Kathmandu. You will have completed a demanding trek and achieved the summit of one of the most beautiful mountains in Nepal. By tradition, Earthbound Expeditions buys the beers in Kathmandu for you!
