Island Peak Climbing - 20 Days

Island Peak (IMJA TSE) – 6189 meters

Traditionally known as Imja Tse – it got named “Island Peak” in 1952 due to its striking resemblance to an island on a sea of ice.
This is a classic trek to the Everest region including Kalapathar and Everest Base camp where this experience will take you into the heart of the world’s majestic Himalayan Mountains.
Island peak expedition offers a unique chance for beginners as mountaineers to scale the relatively lesser traveled region, amidst the mighty Himalayas. The summit of Island peak stands adjacent to one of the world’s largest ice walls and offers stunning views of Ama Dablam and the pyramid of Makalu.

This trip also walks us through the renowned Khumbu region within the “land of the Sherpa’s” where we will participate in Nepalese and Tibetan cultures which have existed for centuries. Along this path we will also witness the amazing landscape as we venture through the unspoiled terrain.

Located on top of the Chukung glacier between Ama Dablam and Lhotse Mountains the Island Peak is the most sought after trekking destination because of its challenging geographical conditions. Each year more than 300 groups attempt to scale the summit of Island peak.
This trek offers an excellent opportunity to climb a Himalayan Summit – 6173meters together with an exhilarating trek to the Everest Base Camp and Kalapathar. The most difficult section is a mixed rock and ice wall at a slope of around 45 degrees leading to the narrow summit ridge.
Island Peak has an impressive highly glaciated West Face which rises from the Lhotse Glacier. In fact, the mountain extends from the South Ridge of Lhotse Shar and is separated only by a small col.

Above this gap is the ridge leading to the summit.
From the base camp we will ascend towards a steep grassy slope and small rocky steps to the high camp. It is required to climb a steep exposed snow and ice ramp to the summit ridge therefore fixed ropes will be used where necessary which will increase your chances of safely reaching the summit.
We will confer a final snow pitch before reaching the summit and finally witness the stunning views of the surrounding mountain peaks including – Nuptse, Lhotse, Cho Oyu, Makalu, Ama Dablam and Baruntse.

We will segregate our stays in Dingboche, Shannsa and Monjo and in due course we will make our way back down the valley to Lukla for our flight back to Kathmandu and following our tradition, Earthbound Expeditions will offer beers on the house for you, for having scaled the Island peak.

A physically fit and a compliant person is well qualified to climb the Island peak which will prove to be an adventure of a lifetime!
