What is Trekking? Trekking means generally walking for few days in the mountain area or it’s foothills. Trekking in Nepal means multiple days of hiking or walking in the Himalayas or it’s foot hills, they can be gentle and from 4 to 6 hours a day with occasional breaks in between. As Nepal is mountain country one of the best way to see it’s beauty is though few days or multiple trekking in the mountain although we can see Nepal through drive, raft or flight. Nepal is known as trekker’s paradise so many people from around the world come to Nepal for trekking holidays although 53% people enjoy Nepal’s beauty with out trekking. What is the difference between hiking, trekking or walking in the Himalayas? The hiking can be one day or multiple day too. Mostly based on one place and do multiple day hikes like from Kathmandu, Pokhara, Jomsom etc. The walking holidays are we can call trekking as it involve for 1 day or multiple day, mostly for trekking American prefer to call Hiking where British or European people often say walking holidays where New Zealander may say tramping Holidays. What does tea house trek mean? What kind of guest house do we use on trek? Do we need to do camping in the Himalayas? The tea house on trekking means simple guest house. These are people’s home turn into guest houses ( like home stays) . Most of them are basic but in the region like Annapurna and Langtang they are quite nice lodge and in Everest certain area they have developed some luxury expensive lodges too. Most of Nepal’s trekking holidays these days are lodge to Lodge trek. The simple guest house generally have common bath room and toilet outside the room, mostly solar heated water so while sun is not bright often don’t get hot shower. They are clean and quite comfortable. You will eat dinner and breakfast in the same guest house where you spent the night and lunch will be served in some simple tea house along the walking trail mostly midday. We don’t have to do camping style trek any more in Annapurna, Langtang, Everest, Manasalu, Kanchangjungha , Mardi Himal or even in Mustang trek. Some remote area trek like Api, saipal area have no tea house. We can do simple home stay or camping style trek ( means eat and sleep in tent),. We supply the food and full services camping facilities like pots, pans, tents, meals etc. The tea house trek package ( lodge to lodge trek in Nepal) basically include almost everything for you from start to finish like airport pick up, hotels, sightseeing, permit, guide, porter, meals etc, all the logistics, you just walk each day and enjoy the natural / cultural beauty of Nepal. What kind of food do we eat? What do we get? Do we need to bring anything with us? The ACAP ( Annapurna conservation area project), the national park in Langtanag , Manasalu and Everest area together with lodge management committee each year train the local lodge owner about the food menu and hygiene. So you can get almost all food what you get in town like Kathmandu and Pokhara on trek route too ( taste might be different though) . Popular and good food are like Dal Bhat ( rice, Lentil and curry, most Nepali eat them every day!), some breads, noodle, Pizza, porridge, Musli, tea, coffee, eggs, vegetables, soups etc. You will be getting plenty of food and they are balanced for the trek if you eat them properly. Not forgetting that you need to also drink at least 3 liters of water each day. If you have any special dietary restrictions or medications you have to bring your own food, if you are healthy and don’t mind new taste of food no need to bring anything extra. If you have some favorite chocolate or energy bars you can bring a few. What is the daily itinerary like or the daily routine? The trek itinerary may be different on a different trek route. But generally except the day we go to see sunrise or sunset or have the rest days, most of the days we wake up around 6 – 6.30 AM, have a breakfast and pack bag, by 7.30 we hit the trail, walk until 10.30 or 11 Am including some break, then we stop for lunch break ( they are often freshly made so may take up to 1 hour) and by 12 – 12.30 we start walking and reach to the lodge for 3 or 4 Pm. We can take time taking photos, drinking water, enjoying the view so our body acclimatize well. Enjoy the moment “now”. How is the water supplied? Is it safe to drink? In the mountain you get water 3 ways. You need to bring strong plastic / metal bottle or camel bag , we can get water from the Tap there and use purifying tablets ( can get in Kathmandu) or use filter / ultra UV light etc. Or you can buy boiled or filter water from lodge owner ( will cost USD 1- 4 per liter) or can buy the bottled water ( higher you go price goes up). But we discourage bottle water as it is bad for environment and for your wallet too! Who carries our bags? How does it work? On the trek generally porter carry your bag from one tea house to another one. It will be same porter for whole trek. You have to have one big bag pack or duffel bag for porter to give ( water proof is preferred) and you will just carry the day pack with your stuff that you will need for that day like sun cream, sun glass, water bottle, camera, Poncho, wallet etc. Any extra bag you don’t need on trek can leave in Kathmandu or Pokhara hotels. What to pack? Can we get some stuff in Kathmandu? Different trek route have different packing list. Here is the general ones like good trek shoe, walking pole, flash light, water bottle, water purifying tablets, sun cream, sun glass, day pack, bag pack or duffel bag, 3 to 5 pairs of shocks, inner liners, 2 passport size photos, Swiss army knife, some books, camera, general medicine, your regular medicine etc. But many of the trekking gears like poncho, flash light, walking pole, jacket, sleeping bag you can get here in Kathmandu too not so expensive. Some of them are real North face or north Fake. But they works fine. In Many of our trek we provide sleeping bag and jacket free to use so ask us. What is the best month to travel to Nepal? What is the average temperature? Nepal is world of it’s own and can be travel in all months. If you see Nepal’s travelling trend people travel all months in same level so Nepal is for all season, but many guide book suggest the best time for trekking is after monsoon like end of Sept to Dec and spring time end of Feb to June. Any time in between is good for walking / trekking / hiking holidays in Nepal. Same is good for Bhutan and India also. Tibet is good April to Nov. What is the best route to reach Nepal? Or surrounding? How is international ticket purchased? Do you have other activities besides trek? What tour or activities are there? You can take several route to get Nepal depends on where you are coming from you can travel via Delhi ( India) Dubai, Doha or Qatar. You can travel via Gounzhau or Hong Kong via China or can travel via Thailand – Bangkok, Malaysia or Singapore. The airport in Kathmandu is called the Tribhuvan international airport (TIA) and you can purchase ticket online through Expedia, kayak, zuji or direct with airlines website. If necessary we can also help you. We will be happy to book you extra hotel accommodations, airport transfers or other activities like Yoga, cooking class, sightseeing or volunteering if you decide to arrive 1 or 2 days in advance or decide to depart 1 or 2 days after the trip (which we always recommend) Can you get Nepalese visa upon arrival? Yes Nepal visa can get upon arrival, it is relatively easy. If you are travelling to India, Bhutan or Tibet after or during your Nepal visit better to get multiple entry visa. How is the Tipping handled? People who handle your bag in airport or hotels around 1 or 2 dollar is fine. ( the airport touts can be very tricky and hard, careful while you giving them to handle their bag at airport or please place your own bag from trolley to the Vehicles that came top pick up you there) . On the trek or tours, for guide and drivers the lonely planet and other guide book suggest about USD 10 per day. So if some one have served you for 5 days expect to pay about USD 50. The restaurants and hotels already have 10% service charge in their menu so it is taken care of. Can we leave extra luggage while on trek? Yes you can leave your extra bag or suitcase in Kathmandu or Pokhara hotels, they will have free storage (please be extra careful for breakable ones). Valuable should be always kept in the locker services though. How safe is it to travel to Nepal? Nepal is very friendly country and it is totally safe to travel Nepal ( don’t stay too late in dark and don’t trust every one that you meet), on trek you shouldn’t travel alone or too fast too high. Do we need any vaccination or Malaria tablet? To travel Nepal you don’t need any vaccination, if you have taken flu shot that might help a bit. No need to have Malaria tablet while on trek unless you travel far south west of Nepal in hot months ( for Jungle safari). But I do recommended to bring your own simple medicine kit and regular medication. What are the favorite activities, the culture, population, and religion, etc.? The city tours, the 8 days tour of Kathmandu – Pokhara – Chitwan and trek holidays in Nepal ( short or long) are the popular ones. The other popular holidays are rafting, fishing, Yoga, home stays, Farming, Ayurveda, volunteering, cooking class, Jungle safari , Motor biking or mountain biking. Bungy, Paragliding, Kayaking, Cannoning are also popular. We can help you to arrange any of the above mentioned holiday package, let us know if you are interest to involve with us. Do we need to do any Insurance? From where do we buy it? Do you have any recommended list? I will recommend that you have Insurance for all of Nepal Tibet trip, especially for trekking. For trip delay, flight cancelling, search and rescue. We can recommended following one like Global rescue, Insure and go etc. Can we travel to nearby countries while visiting Nepal with you? While you visiting Nepal you can combine package to India, Sri-lanka, Bhutan, Tibet or even Myanmar. We can help you for other countries arrangements like Peru, Bolivia, Kili Manjaro, Cambodia, Laos , New Zealand etc also. Just let us know how you would like to proceed we will be happy to help.
