Among all the glorious mountains in the world, Mount Everest stands as the tallest one. It is a part of the great Himalayan Range that passes through Nepal. The climbers from all around the globe thrive to conquer the peak of Everest. Climbing Everest can be an epic challenge for most climbers, even for the ones with years of experience. The successful climb during the Everest expedition can be taken as one of the greatest achievements a climber can have. However, there are limitless hurdles on the mountain. One of the hurdles climbers face during the beginning of their climbing journey is Khumbu Icefall. The icefall is considered to be the deadliest and toughest section of the Everest Expedition journey.

The South Col route introduces you to the deadly Khumbu Icefall ……..

Khumbu Icefall

Source: Wikipedia

Khumbu Icefall is located at the top of Khumbu Glacier. The glacier that you will see between Mahalangur and the Kumbhakarna ranges is Khumbu Glacier. The icefall is the key route to Mt. Everest; mountains like Lhotse and Nuptse are its neighbors. Khumbu Icefall starts from the elevation of 4600 m and goes higher.

After crossing Khumbu Glacier, and trekking for another one mile, the journey will introduce you to Pumori Lake. As you walk further, you will observe the thickness of surface debris increasing, from the base of the icefall to its endpoint.

Khumbu Glacier is a part of lots of untold stories and dark secrets of successes and failures. To share a few, Khumbu Glacier consists of Khumbu icefall which is the first obstacle climber’s face during the Mt. Everest expedition.  It originates from the Khumbu Glacier. The glacier melts with the sun’s rays and flows to reach the point where Khumbu Icefall starts. Due to global warming, the ice sheets are melting fast. Khumbu Icefall is now considered to be a melting river of ice that shifts every year.

The Khumbu Icefall is a 2000 foot long climb on a moving glacier. It has deep crevasses and big seracs. Crevasses range from about 1 to 10 meters in width. If you fall into a crevasse, it is really hard to get out. The climbers prefer crossing the Khumbu Icefall early in the morning between 3 am and 4 am. There is a chance for the icefall to be more runny and unstable during the day due to the rise in temperature.

In the morning, it’s cold and sunlight cannot warm the area which prevents the falling of ice blocks. So, it is better not to cross the Khumbu icefall during mid to late-afternoon, otherwise, you might have a bad experience around ice structures.

Khumbu Icefall terrifies you with the sound of ice blocks crashing down creating drum beats inside your chest or hyperventilating in fear. You would not get even a small hint of seracs falling down from the top; things would be so sudden.

Don’t you find it a thrilling adventure that just stays in your imagination? Adventure here in Mount Everest comes with heavenly pleasures as well as life-threatening risks.

While crossing the Khumbu Icefall, you have to go through metal ladders. There are several ladders on the way. Few ladders are fixed to support others. You are not allowed to rest during the cross because it is always moving and the chances are you might put your life at risk.

Even more, the Khumbu Icefall Avalanche is hard to predict. The accident zone is popular by the name Popcorn Valley. It is very common in the Khumbu region. Khumbu icefall observes the random fall of big or small avalanches. The boulders of ice rolling and hitting each other sometimes can injure or even worse of all, take the lives of climbers.

Khumbu icefall has low temperature and the area is made of ice. You might get frostbite which causes your skin to get burned or darkened. As there is a lack of oxygen and you are already climbing to such huge height, your body gets lethargic. It is very hard to cross without mountain gears.

Well, many have achieved success battling with its difficulty.

There has been an increase in the death rate on Khumbu Icefall in comparison to any other part of Everest’s Southside. According to a 2014 report, 16 Sherpas died in the Khumbu Icefall due to an ice avalanche. There is also a place called Everest Rainbow Valley

You might be wondering –

How can Rainbows that occur only after rainfall exist in the Mountains?

Or maybe it is a green valley full of colors?

The reality of Everest Rainbow Valley is quite different from your imagination. The place has been named Everest Rainbow Valley mainly because of the corpses of the climbers who were attempting to reach the top of Everest. It is located at the northeast Ridge Route. Rainbow valley has colorful red, green, blue jackets that cover the bodies of the dead climbers.

The cold temperature of the Khumbu region does not let the microorganisms deteriorate the body and prevents decomposition.

The government of Nepal has prioritized this issue:

The Nepal government has made it a requirement for the climbers to be well-trained and highly experienced for getting the expedition permits. Only the alpinists who have successfully climbed on peaks above 7,000 meters in Nepal shall be given the permit to climb 8,000 meters tall mountains.

Your safety matters the most.  And, you will always be at an altitude higher than 3000 m. Many trekkers face altitude sickness during the trip.

There are metal ladders to cross crevasses. Also, Ice fall experts and guides study the whole region to choose the best season to climb. When the team forecasts the weather and predicts avalanches, choppers are called to rescue people from Everest. You can take a helicopter ride from the main Base Camp to Base Camp one.

You can avoid Khumbu Icefall as well by choosing another route to climb Mount Everest. There are several routes that guide you to reach the top of the mountain.

Mount Everest Climbing gears

Choosing the right climbing gears is important as they vary according to the mountain. And, it is better to know about climbing gears in advance so that you make yourself halfway prepared for the journey.

The equipment used for mountain climbing includes harnesses, face masks, crampons, shoes, and so on that are not casual. Choosing the right mountain gears prevents you from getting frostbite and any other physical mishaps. You can spare crampons that are light and durable. You can carry extra caps to protect your head. Wear lightweight and windproof gloves in icefall and jackets during the journey. Also, use heat-exchanging and wired face masks in the Khumbu region to prevent yourself from cold coughing.

And, you are all set for Everest.
