Upon the recommendation of a dear friend who had used Earthbound Expeditions the year prior my wife and I booked our trip to Everest Base Camp for March 2017. We spoke with Rajan Simkhada with EB and coordinated the trek itinerary. He laid out the dates, times, hotels, activities, suggested things we never thought of and all in a remarkably timely fashion (that's huge in our book). He arranged for our guide, the irrepressibly charming and happy Resham Raz(A++) and our porter Bahl, to lead our adventure. We were elated to finally meet the both upon our arrival and see that each was just as pleasant in person. Our first days in town lined up with the Holi festival. Resham took us around to the sights of Boudhanath and the "monkey temple." We saw a cremation ceremony on the river and Resham gave a remarkable history on all we encountered. After the tour we got to celebrate Holi and we joined the crowded streets with our colored dyes and had more fun than could be imagined. The whole country was celebrating with music color and laughter. The coming day our trek to Base Camp began. Rajan and Resham recapped the plan and the long hike began. The hike was hard and seemed overwhelming on countless occasions but Resham encouraged us and kept us positive each step of the way. Our preparation for this trip was woefully inadequate simply due to geography. The highest elevation at home is ~1000 meters, Lukla STARTS at ~2900. This is conjunction with the duration of the hikes made us feel well out of shape but we soldiered on. Words cannot even come close to describing the awe of the Himalayas, especially to this Florida born boy. The tea houses EB had arranged were all quite suitable granted the quality is inversely proportionate to altitude but this you are forewarned. We made it to EBC despite our concerns and the adventure was a success. Unfortunately my wife had succumbed to the altitude and difficulty breathing/HAPE and we had to be helicoptered back to KTM. Adventure isn't without risk. EB arranged the helicopter and hospital stay seamlessly. My wife recovered after a few days in the hospital and we enjoyed our last days shopping. Rajan and Resham with Earthbound made this an experience we will never forget and thank them.
