Mr. Bill O’Connor, who wrote the book The Trekking Peaks of Nepal wrote the following statement about Mera peak climbing. THE CLIMAX: “Scaling the Mera Peak is your chance to venture into the modest visitations by trekkers and yet it is an intact region of Nepal where the hillsides are still densely forested and self-sufficient. There is also, of course, the pleasure of going beyond 21,000 feet.”
At about 6450 meters, the Mera peak is officially the highest trekking peak within the Himalayas of Nepal. Elevating south of Everest, Mera peak was first climbed by Roberts and Sen Tenzing in 1953 and it is at the present the standard route.
Once in this area, you will trek through the remote, heavily forested, and largely uninhabited Hinku valley. The ascent of Mera peak climbing is commonly technically straightforward requiring little more than crampons, Rope, and ice ax. We will fix ropes where necessary and our expedition guide and professional Sherpa’s will assist you as much as possible.
Subsequent to an exciting mountain flight from Kathmandu to Lukla our trek will begin by heading southeast from Lukla. We will walk along a high rocky ridge through dense forests and across several streams before reaching the pass that will take us into the Hinku valley. Trekking and camping in this wild land of the Himalayan pine forests will indeed be an extraordinary experience.
At Thaknak we will rest and explore the huge moraine and the beautiful glacial lake north of the village. We will proceed to Khare -5,099 meters and set up our camps. Our Mera peak climbing ascent will follow the glacier that leads to Mera La – 5415 meters and on to the elevated campsite of 5800 meters, where we will prepare for our early morning summit.
From the elevated camp, we can take in a sweeping view of Kanchenjunga, Chamlang, and Makalu to the east, Everest and Lhotse to the north, and Ama Dablam and Cho Oyu to the west. This will undoubtedly be one of the most stunning views you will witness in all of Nepal during Mera peak climbing.
With good conditions, we will summit Mera Peak the following morning and you will have completed a demanding trek and achieved the summit of one of the most beautiful mountains in Nepal.
In due course we will make our way back down the valley to Lukla for our flight back to Kathmandu and following our tradition, Earthbound Expeditions will offer beers on the house for you for having scaled Mera peak!
Mera peak climbing can also be combined with Island peak climbing which crosses the passes along Amphu Lapcha and in addition, this expedition can also include Everest Base Camp.
If this offer sounds exciting, all you have to do is spare a few more days, energy and a couple of few more bucks to get you going.
