Overview

Jomsom Muktinath trek -  Lower Mustang trek – walking from Pokhara to Jomsom Muktinath via Poon hill

The Jomsom Muktinath trek as it is commonly known is also a part of the Annapurna Circuit Trek. The lower Musatang trek to Muktinath begins from Pokhara, goes over Poon hill, and passes through the Valley of Kali Gandaki River to the pilgrim site of Muktinath.

The natural beauty along the Pokhara – Jomsom Muktinath trek is breathtaking. The scenery of the Jomsom Muktinath trek trail ranges from the forests of brilliant red rhododendrons to rocky cliffs and deserts of the Mustang region. You Can also take a bath in TatoPani ( natural hot spring ) to wash away all the pain along the trek trail.

The Jomsom Muktinath trek trail follows part of the popular poon hill trek and descends down to Kali Gandaki River valley which used to be the trade route between India and China long ago. Kaligandaki river forms the most massive gorge in the world and on one side lies the Annapurna mountain range and on the other hand, lays the Dhaulagiri both over 8000 meter high. Between the two varieties, there are views of 8 of the 20 highest mountains in the world. The Kali Gandaki is a quarter of a mile wide river bed, and during the winters the river is practically dry, but during the summers and monsoons, the water level rises with rainwater and melting snow. You can find fossil rocks in the banks of Kali Gandaki River which is believed to be sacred for the Hindus and known as Saligrams – the incarnation of Lord Bishnu.

The culture among the Jomson trek trail is rich with the religious mixture of Hindus and Tibetan Buddhist followers.

The Jomsom trail weaves through the Lower Mustang region of Nepal ending at the village of Kagbeni which is a Tibetan influenced village filled with prayer wheels, small stupas (chortens), and a Buddhist monastery. The Kaligandaki Jomsom – Muktinath trail was also the part of Silk road in the past.

The highest point on this trail is Muktinath at 3800 meters – a holy site of temples that have been sacred to both Buddhists and Hindus for centuries.
There is a motorable road now between Pokhara to Jomsom and Muktinath, so if you wish not to walk the whole trail it is possible to use a Jeep or Bus. The Muktinath Temple is a famous pilgrimage site for a large number of Hindu followers in India and every year lots of pilgrims from Nepal, India, and from around the world visit Muktinath Temple ( also known as Mukti Chetra – means land of salvation). Further from the small Town, Kagbeni is the famous Upper Mustang region known as a lost Tibetan kingdom which is famous for walking Holidays.

Good choice
I spent approximately three weeks sending e-mail to different companies to decide which one to choose. They are pretty similar when you receive the e-mails although the prices are quite different. Earthbound came with a good price and I like the communication with Rajan. The e-mails were nicely detailed and he was open to discuss new ideas. The first day I arrive in Kathmandu there was someone waiting me at the airport, the person took me to the Hotel, which I chose before, and in the next morning there was a really nice guide who take me to a tour around Kathmandu. I went then to the Agency and after a long talk to Rajan I changed my plan and instead of going to Langtang region I went to Pokhara heading to Mustang area. I paid for a Guide and a Porter and one day before he told me I would have a porter guide which I did not like. I'd rather believe it was a mistake since as soon I told him I paid for both separately he said there was no problem. One of the things I believe differ from one Agency to another is the choice of the "hotels" you will stay during you trekking. I believe some agencies safe money at this point. I have no complains about the hotels I stayed during my trekking except one that was quite dirty. Anyway you should not expect to do a trail with fancy hotels. Most of them have no hot water and are basic but good. The guide and the porter were nice people and really helpful. The guide told me to not eat meat during the trip. Later on I found out they say sometimes to not eat meat to safe money as they receive a fix amount from the Agency and whatever they save stay with them. Anyway, I agreed with the idea of not having meat as I might not be used to it. I told my guide to suggest something every day. When I came back from Mustang there was no flight available due to bad weather. We came back by bus, truck and the guide made the difference. We had a big group and if my guide was not there I believe we would not have arrived back in Pokhara on the same day. All the guides were following my guide. The price was reasonably good. Overall I would recommend Earthbound.

A most wonderful trekking experience with Earthbound Expeditions
My friends and I booked the Jomosom Muktinath trek in December 2015 through Earthbound Expeditions. The trek itself was the most wonderful I have done to date. Walking through mountain scenery and seeing village life in the foothills of the Annapurna region was the highlight of the trek. I recommend it to anyone. The trek was capped at both ends with a stay in Kathmandu, a dynamic city. EE provided a fantastic tour of Kathmandu’s sights and history as well. We also spent two nights in Pokhara and undertook a cooking class on daal bhat. Mr. Rajan and Shreeram and the porter crew ensured that the trek went without problems. But as always approach trekking in Nepal with an open mind and accept the daily adventures that come along as that is where all the memories come from. I am thoroughly impressed with Earthbound Expeditions and will not hesitate to call upon them for my return trips to Nepal! Earthbound Expeditions is a professional company who adheres to safety and ensures its clients get what they came for! Their services are first class!

Exhilarating view and excellent service
I did the Jomsom Muktinath Trek in May together with my boyfriend. We changed the offered tour and got our own ‚private‘ tour for 8 days. We went together with our guide Namaraj Sapkota and our porter. Because we spent some more time in Nepal apart from trekking, we started the tour in Pokhara. On the tour we slept in comfortable Teahouses and also the drinks and food were quite good. The impressions and views will always be remembered. Our guide, Namaraj Sapkota, told us a lot about the people oft the Anapurna area and Nepal in general. As well as the rituals of the temple in Muktinath, the whole story about the earthquake and even the traditional way of living in this area. Our guide was always caring about us and our health. All the time we're feeling pretty safe. We didn’t see any effets oft he earthquake in the Anapurna region, all the roads and the bridges were in good condition, so we had no problems. In Kathmandu, we only saw a few buildings and temple which were being rebuilt. The whole trip was very well organized by Earthbound Expeditions and individual and spontaneous wishes were always possible. We can highly recommend Earthbound Expeditions and our Guide Namaraj Sapkota. The next trip will definitely be with them. All in all we can say the country and the people are amazing, it has an exhilarating landscape.
